“SUT Zero Waste: Towards Creating a Green University for Sustainable Development”

Suranaree University of Technology (SUT) prioritizes sustainable waste management, operating under the motto "SUT Zero Waste: Towards a Green University for Sustainable Development." This promotes efficient resource utilization and reduces waste generation within the university. SUT maintains a monthly waste reporting and monitoring system, managed by the Buildings and Grounds Division, for effective waste management planning. Waste is categorized into general waste, recyclable waste, and hazardous waste, with data collected on the amount of recycled and reused waste. Furthermore, SUT implements a Recyclable Waste Bank project to promote waste sorting at the source and encourages faculty and students to participate in reducing waste sent to landfills. This is coupled with the SUT Say No Plastic project and the use of biodegradable materials as alternatives to single-use plastics. These initiatives reflect the university's policy of continuous waste management and monitoring of recycled and disposed waste, aiming for true zero waste. In the fiscal year 2025 (October 2024 - September 2025), the total annual waste volume was 3,446.86 tons. The breakdown of waste types included: hazardous waste (0.01%), biomass fuel (0.08%), recyclable waste (1.97%), landfill waste (2.06%), mixed-grade refuse fuel (41.67%), and moisture content (54.22%). Of this, 97.93% of waste was reusable (recyclable, biomass fuel, and refuse fuel), while only 2.07% required disposal. For non-recyclable or unrecyclable waste, the university will collect and dispose of it through sanitary landfilling using services from external agencies authorized by the Pollution Control Department or local administrative organizations. This is part of the integrated waste management system, ensuring that the remaining waste from the internal sorting process at Suranaree University of Technology (SUT) is managed safely and without negative environmental impact.

SUT Zero Waste

SUT Zero Waste is a flagship project of Suranaree University of Technology, declared in 2020, to drive sustainable and environmentally friendly waste management within the university under the concept of "Zero Waste." Its objectives are:
To reduce waste generation at the source. To promote waste sorting and recycling.
To reduce the use of single-use plastics.
To reuse and recycle waste.
To cultivate environmental awareness among personnel, students, and service users. The project is under the responsibility of the Office of Buildings and Grounds and the Green University Committee, with various activities and sub-projects such as: Recyclable Waste Bank: Establishing over 200 collection points throughout the university to collect and record monthly recyclable waste data.
SUT Say No Plastic: Campaigning to reduce the use of single-use plastics in restaurants and various departments.
SUT Green Office: Promoting the reduction of paper and consumable materials in offices.
Organic Waste Management Project: Using food scraps and fallen leaves to make compost for use in the university's green spaces.
