World Environment Day 2026
Suranaree University of Technology (SUT) celebrates its 36th anniversary on the path to becoming a green university, launching the "From Kitchen to Machine" project, transforming used cooking oil into high-value products.
On World Environment Day, June 5th, 2026, Suranaree University of Technology (SUT) showcased environmental innovations and sustainable development initiatives. These included launching a project to separate used cooking oil, "From Kitchen...to Appliances," a sustainable waste management mechanism; awarding prizes for the "SUT Energy Challenge #3" to energy-efficient buildings; and increasing green spaces through tree planting, all in celebration of the university's 36th anniversary.
Today (June 5, 2026), at the Learning Park, Associate Professor Dr. Sittichai Sangarthit, Acting President of Suranaree University of Technology (SUT), presided over the opening ceremony of the “SUT World Environment Day 2026” event. He was joined by Associate Professor Dr. Ekkarong Sukhjit, Assistant President for Buildings and Grounds, university administrators, staff, and students. The event launched the “From Kitchen…to Equipment” campaign to separate used cooking oil. This campaign promotes the sustainable and appropriate disposal of used cooking oil (UCO), a type of hazardous waste, by establishing a systematic collection and purchase system from its source. The oil will then be processed into value-added products such as SAF (Sodium Acetate), biochemicals, chemical industry precursors, and bioplastics, aligning with the principles of the Circular Economy. Furthermore, the campaign promotes better hygiene within the university community, including staff residences and food establishments.
At the 2026 World Environment Day event, SUT (Suranaree University of Technology) featured several interesting activities, including a sustainable materials bank, a "Punpip Thong" shop accepting donations and selling used clothing and other items, an exhibition showcasing environmental innovations and sustainable development (such as the integrated waste management plant and the SEDA project), a lunch subsidy for students, the awarding of prizes for the "SUT Energy Challenge #3" for electricity conservation campaigns in the university buildings and student dormitories, awards for the highest-selling members of the recycling materials bank in the student dormitories, and a tree planting activity around the Suranives 19-22 student dormitories, planting 336 trees over a distance of 400 meters to increase green space and create a pleasant environment, in celebration of the university's 36th anniversary.
Associate Professor Dr. Sittichai Sang-arthit, Acting President of Suranaree University of Technology (SUT),
stated that the “From Kitchen…to Aircraft” project, aimed at expanding to a network of higher education institutions nationwide, will see SUT serve as a collection point for UCO (Uncirculated Coagulation Unit) oil. This creates a model for waste management within higher education institutions, which can be scaled up to the wider society. The project fosters systematic waste management based on the Circular Economy and supports Thailand's goal of becoming the "ASEAN Low-Carbon Aviation Hub." SUT's policy of promoting a “Green University” aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. It seeks to raise awareness and emphasize the importance of mitigating environmental and energy problems using readily available resources. Everyone is invited to adopt a new lifestyle under the concept of “Global Call for Climate Action: Adapt, Change, and Build a Thailand to Combat Global Warming,” aligning with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment's policy.
